Upon discovering Hidey on the streets, it was evident that she was in a critical condition. While cats are generally regarded as self-sufficient animals, certain breeds require consistent grooming. Hidey endured years of neglect due to her owner’s inability to care for her grooming needs. Rescuers initially perceived her as an otherworldly being because of her severely matted fur. Paul Russell, who came across her, exclaimed, “My god, this is a cat!” At 14 years of age, Hidey was rescued by a compassionate couple and brought to the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center. The neglect she experienced was a consequence of her owner’s struggle with Alzheimer’s, which left Hidey unable to maintain her own grooming. She has since become a poignant representation of the importance of caring for elderly individuals and their pets.
